Onno Hessbeen’s HAL 1960’s ‘paper’ Fleet

Here are my 1960’s Holland America Line fleet. I used four existing cutout models as templates to create this 1:350 scale fleet. Here is a list of the cutout models I used:

The Rijndam / Maasdam @ scale 1:300, released by "De Prins Uitgeverij"

The Rotterdam @ scale 1:350, released by "Bouwplaten"

The Statendam @ scale 1:350, released by "Bouwplaten"

The Nieuw Amsterdam @ scale 1:700, released by "Bouwplaten" and is part of the "Big Three Collection" (Nieuw Amsterdam, Oranje and Willem Ruys)

I wanted to create the HAL passengers fleet of the 60’s, that means basically all ships had the 60’s livery of a duff grey hull and a mustard coloured funnel with green / white / green bands. Two of the models (Rotterdam and Statendam) are in the 70’s livery of blue hull and orange funnel), one in the pre WWII livery (Nieuw Amsterdam in black hull with golden stripe) and only the Rijndam / Maasdam (which is one and the same model) had the correct 60’s livery. I had to do some cosmetic changes to these models and scanned all of them. Not only did I alter the liveries, I changed the deck texture in to a more convincing teak graphic (was a canary yellow shade with lines on it). I also drawn new details where needed. In case of the Nieuw Amsterdam I had to alter and scratch build / draw a lot. The original cutout model was scale 1:700 and so small it did not have the detail effect of the larger models. For instance the open promenade was just painted on the side of the block presenting the superstructure, the lifeboats was a long rectangular block with on each side 10 lifeboats painted on the block. So I have completely redrawn these parts so that the new model has an open promenade showing the inner superstructure. I drew the davits and the all the lifeboats. I added more detail to the funnels and funnel area equipment.

When all the digital drawing was complete rescaled the models all into scale 1:350 and printed them on cardboard. After cutting, folding and gluing the models where finished, now only the rigging needed to be done. The digital drawing took a few weeks but when printed I finished the models with in a weekend (and if I’m not mistaking a very rainy one).

Here are the pictures of the models:

A group shot of the 60’s HAL fleet all in the same livery.

A detail shot of the bridge of Nieuw Amsterdam II. I completely drawn / scratch-built the superstructure from the Promenade Deck up.

Aft views of the typical Rotterdam smoke uptakes.

A detail shot of the bridge of Rijndam / Maasdam. This model needed hardly any altering.

A detailed aft shot of Rijndam / Maasdam showing the cargo equipment.

A funnel shot of the Statendam. I had to delete the deckhouse in front of the funnel because that wasn’t installed during the 60’s.

A totality shot of the Statendam showing how nice she looked in the 60’s livery and how well the teak deck graphic works.
