Haven by Atle Ellefsen

Atle's collection of ship subjects includes the hospital ship Haven. Atle sends in the following text: This is the original version of a rare kit, the Hope. Haven utilizes however all the parts in the kit however there are another pair of masts and derricks, landing craft on the foredeck and stacked lifeboats as far as I can see. I am not sure of the scale, might be around 1:570.

Looking at the kit from the port side Atle continues: I find it a very interesting subject and a rewarding kit to assemble. The US navy commissioned a huge amount (50 plus) ships of similar design for military personnel transport at the end of the war and into the 50's. They are in fact all listed in Arnold Kludas' book series Great Passenger Ships of the World.

A port bow angle showing the large amount of detail this kit comes with. Atle states: I have built it straight out of the box, using stretched sprue and nylon strands for the rigging. I have weathered it a little, using weathering powder from the Dutch company "Artitec". I can strongly recommend this powder which comes in light and dark earth colours, red and brown rust, and green algae, white and black.

In the background on a few of the pictures you can see the bulk of my 1:350 Titanic. I bought and built it way back in 1975, and it has been the prize of my collection all these years. I built it straight out of the box and despite my almost maniac interest in Titanic in those days, research and data in the form of Titanic modeling sites and Encyclopedia Titanica did not exist. So there is nothing special about it, it lacks the most obvious corrections now so familiar to all. The only thing is that it's old.

Atle's effort is again rewarded with a fine example of the completed model seen here again next to his 1:350 Titanic model.

A view looking forward along the starboard side displaying interesting details and construction layout these unique but important ships had.
